the weekend

saturday mornings have taken on a whole new meaning since webb has gotten older.
this morning we took him for a ride around the neighborhood in his radio wagon that he got from his grandparents.

and then he got to do what he loves to do the most ...

sit next to the garden and watch his "dada" work. he's never more content!

hope you have a happy, relaxing weekend!

It wouldn't be Christmas...

without Christmas brunch! Talk about tradition, this is definitely one that has stuck. Every year there are a few new twists, but there's always the Country Grits and Sausage Casserole. I found this recipe in a Southern Living Christmas Cookbook long ago. Here's the recipe. It's always a hit!

Ingredients

* 2 pounds mild ground pork sausage (I use turkey sausage)
* 4 cups water
* 1 1/4 cups quick-cooking grits, uncooked
* 4 cups (1 pound) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
* 1 cup milk
* 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
* 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
* 4 large eggs, lightly beaten
* Paprika
* Garnish: fresh parsley sprigs

Preparation

Brown sausage in a large skillet, stirring until it crumbles. Drain well, and set aside.

Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan, and stir in grits. Return to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; add cheese and next 3 ingredients, stirring until cheese melts. Stir in sausage and eggs.

Spoon mixture into a lightly greased 13" x 9" x 2" baking dish; sprinkle with paprika. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 1 hour or until golden and heated. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Garnish, if desired.

Make-Ahead: Prepare grits mixture as directed above, but do not bake. Cover and chill overnight. Remove from refrigerator; let stand, covered 30 minutes. Uncover and bake as directed.

Oh Ornament, Oh Ornament

(photo from Real Simple)
'
When it came time to decorate our first Christmas tree together, Casey and I decided we would add a special ornament to our tree each year. I feel like most couples decide to do this. We've actually stuck to it and it's been such a special and fun tradition.

It all started with a trip to Michael's where we bought some of our first ornaments, for 50% off of course. After all, that is what Michael's is good for over the holidays! We found two skiing reindeer that reminded us of our ski trip where we got engaged. Along the way we've picked up some other special ornaments like our NYC taxi cab, Hemingway house, SEE Rock City bird house, and Colonel Reb. It's been fun to think back about different trips and in some cases adventures we've had along the way. Wonder what ornament we'll get this year.

Special Stockings

The stockings were always the first thing I went searching for when our Christmas decorations came out of the attic. The decorations always seemed complete once those special stockings were hung on the mantle. I just ordered Webb's stocking from pottery barn kids and I can't wait to hang it next to mine and Casey's. Too bad we don't have a mantle to hang them on ... maybe next year!

It's a Wonderful Life

I think most of you will agree that watching It's a Wonderful Life is a must during the holidays. Casey was appalled years ago when I told him that I had never watched it in its entirety and honestly had no clue what it was about. I went through a stage in my life, okay most of my life, when I really didn't like watching old movies. So every year when It's a Wonderful Life came on NBC, I'd just change the channel.

In Nashville there is this great little theater, which is actually one of the last remaining neighborhood theaters, that plays It's a Wonderful Life the week of Christmas. It's called The Belcourt. So for the past 4 years, Casey and I make it a date and head down to The Belcourt to watch this heartwarming film on the big screen. It just wouldn't be Christmas without it!

24 Days to Christmas

I've decided to call this month's blog the "24 Days to Christmas". What better way to get in the Christmas spirit! Each day, if I can get my act together, I'm going to talk about my favorite Christmas memories, traditions, and of course, dishes.

There's no better way to start this months post then with a favorite tradition, which always began on December 1st. It's when my dad brought home the Advent Calendar, the chocolate Advent Calendar that is! I remember him coming in the house all dressed up from work, briefcase in hand, arms full of books and files and the Advent Calendar spilling out of his arms. It was the most exciting sight! He always got them at the same place, Shapiro's Deli in Downtown Chattanooga. Shapiro's was located right across the street from my dad's office. I always loved visiting dad at work during lunchtime as a child. He would usually take us to Shapiro's and when it came time to pay, say "put all this on my tab". I mean I felt like we were big time. Haha! It makes me laugh now to think about.

I'll never forget each night my brother and I would pull out our calendars to see what chocolate shaped treat we would find. I'd always get so upset though because sometimes my brother would eat three in one night. He'd try to convince me that I should do the same. I usually did whatever he did, so I'm sure I just followed suit!

As we got older, the Advent Calendar didn't make it home each year, but I've decided to bring it back. I got one for my brother and sister-in-law this year at Trader Joe's. They were only 99 cents! And I'm gonna go back and get Casey and I one this week.

What a great tradition to start this holiday season when everyone is so stressed about spending. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Must See for the Holidays

If you're like me and love to cozy up with a good Christmas movie after stuffing your tummy with turkey and dressing, you've gotta rent Four Christmases. We rented it last night and it was such a great movie! Very light-hearted and hysterical. Vince Vaughn is his usual funny, fast talking self and Reese Witherspoon is too cute, as always. I would even suggest it as a stocking stuffer for Christmas. This would be a great one to pull out every December. Another favorite Christmas movie of mine, The Holiday. Gotta love it! I never liked Jude Law until this movie.

Hope everyone has safe travels today as you are heading to your family for Turkey Day. Gooble Gooble!
